The wacky comedy that is New Girl.

While I was on Spring Break I slept for the majority of the time but in between sleeping I watched a number of shows on my Netflix account. I watched the first two seasons of Fox’s sitcom “New Girl” which began airing in 2011. Starring Zooey Deschanel as Jess, and extremely awkward school teacher who just gets out of a bad relationship, who then moves in with three guys she meets through Craigslist; and Max Greenfield as Schmidt a well put together Jewish “player”. He is unaware of how d-bag he can be. Jake Johnson as Nick Miller a 30 year old law school dropout who has no idea what to do with his life and he is also Jess’s potential love interest. The third and final roommate is Winston Bishop played by Lamorne Morris. He is a former “pro” basketball player in Latvia; who at the beginning of the series doesn’t have a job because all he knows is basketball and he has trouble staying in a long term relationship. Along with the roommates, the other main character is Jess’s long time best friend Cecilia “Cece” Parekh played by Hannah Simone. In the beginning of the series I found the main character Jess to be extremely off putting. She was so awkward that the jokes didn’t work. The reason I kept watching was because of Schmidt. He for a large portion of the first season in particular carried the show for me. I didn’t really come around to the character of Jess until about the midway point of the first season, when they started hinting at the fact that Jess cares about Nick more than just a roommate. What makes the show work on a broader level is the chemistry between the core cast members. If you’re into wacky romantic comedies, this show is definitely worth the look. The first two seasons are available on Netflix and the last five episodes of the third season are available on Hulu as they air.
